A Starry Night - 5th/6th Class
5th & 6th class: A Starry Night
A few weeks ago, the 5th and 6th class made their own unique versions of Vincent Van Gogh’s: ‘A Starry Night.’ Here’s how we did it, and a few facts about the artist and ‘A Starry Night’ itself.
Van Gogh:
Vincent William Van Gogh was a Dutch post- impressionist painter, born in 1853. As a young man, Van Gogh worked for a company of art- dealers. Later on he became a full- time artist. Sadly, he suffered from anxiety and fits of mental illness, causing him to cut off his own ear, which he gave to his landlord’s daughter for safe- keeping, and later end his own life when he was only 37 years old.
A Starry Night:
A Starry Night is an oil on canvas painting created by Van Gogh in the Saint- Paul Asylum in 1889. It depicts a view over a small town, surrounded by mountains and boasting an impressive cypress tree. It has been in the Museum of Modern Art, in New York, since 1941, and is now one of the most renowned pieces of western art.
Replicating Van Goghs: ‘A Starry Night’:
To create our beautiful paintings, we started by sketching a basic scene, with most choosing a tree, but some others selecting other items for their foreground. Then we painted the sky and the grass, sporting the original starry night colours. To finish off, we added our own unique touches, to truly make the paintings our own. We had loads of fun. ( excluding the cleaning that followed! )
All in all, we think our classroom has produced some amazing works of art, learning lots in the process.
